La Capilla is one of a handful of restaurants in the Huntington Beach area I remember going to thirty or so years ago when two tacos, rice, and beans was "exotic" and getting a sucker on the way out was the highlight of my meal, except that La Capilla hasn't always been La Capilla and it hasn't always been a Mexican restaurant but I think it has mostly been a Mexican restaurant. I have only known it to be such but have heard there was a brief stint when it was an Indonesian restaurant. It's still retained its old school charm replete with sunny courtyard, interior so dimly lit you need night vision goggles while inside, and wrought iron chandeliers you could imagine Zorro swinging from.
The food was just what one would expect: serviceable and comfortable. Warm chips and chunky, flavorful salsa; chicken tortilla soup that didn't necessarily intrigue but did warm the soul; and lemon cilantro chicken as a main dish that was very lemony, very cilantro-y, very chickeny, and very buttery. And, yes, I got a sucker on the way out.

For carrying on the tradition of tradition for tradition's sake so well La Capilla earns a three and a half Speedy Gonzales rating for the time being:

  1. It used to be an Indonesian restaurant?! Whoa! Do you know which one? Not that it matters now. Just curious.

  3. My sons and I went for dinner tonight, The waiter was the Manager Ken he took our order only never came back again the Bus boy took care of us, The food was cold I ordered a combo enchilada and tamale the tamale was prob the worst one I have ever eaten it was all corn mass loads meat was dry and cold the enchilada was ok what can be bad with cheese. the only thing hot on my plate was the beans, tried to tell Bus boy he didn't quite understand. my kids got fajitas they were not real hot not good either, and the rice was cool to the bus boy brought him a little warmer rice. I had asked to talk to the manager he said its the same guy that waited on you. I said he is awful he said I hear that a lot.

  4. Hopefully they can work out these problems but it doesn't sound like they want to.
