Yes, It's Really Mexican Food
I've had a couple people recommending Mollie's Country Kitchen in Laguna Niguel to me and they always assure me that it has plenty of Mexican food. And they always recommend the huevos rancheros. Since I do follow up on every recommendation that is made I went to Mollie's yesterday for lunch and tried the huevos rancheros (over-easy fried eggs on a corn tortilla). You can get them without meat and with red ranchero sauce, or with pork and chile verde sauce. I opted for the latter option and got half beans, half potatoes, sour cream, and guacamole on the side. Highly recommended. This is a breakfast item that I will eat at any time of the day.
On my way out I talked with the manager and he said the restaurant started roughly 25 years ago and was actually opened by a woman named Mollie. There were some Mexican items on the menu even then but when Mollie sold the restaurant to the current manager's father then more Mexican items were added. The late 1970's façade of Mollie's (and the whole strip mall it resides in) could use an update but the food found inside will fill you up and tantalize your taste buds while it does it.
Mollie's Country Kitchen earns a four Speedy Gonzales rating:

I LOVE Mollie's. My sister-in-law took us there, years ago and we've been going ever since.
ReplyDeleteThe line out in front of the door on weekend mornings is a good sign...
This is a great place to go when you have family members that might not be as into Mexican food as you are, since they have great American food (whatever that is), too!
I order Huevos Rancheros for lunch, breakfast and dinner. Machaca, too.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I got turned on to huevos was when I was a busboy at a very non-mexican restaurant in Newport Beach called the Rusty Pelican.
Thanks for the comments. Looks like I'll get to go to the Rusty Pelican now to try their huevos rancheros.
ReplyDeleteWell, that was a long time ago. They did a Sunday brunch with the huevos as part of the menu. The odds are they've made multple changes over the years...
ReplyDeleteAt one point the Rusty Pelican had several restaurants in a number of states. But I believe only the original in Newport remains open.
Okay, making a mental note that they might not have it anymore.
ReplyDeleteWith a name like that, it needed the disclaimer. =)
ReplyDeleteYes, analyzation of my site traffic suggests that when people come here for the first time looking for information on Mexican restaurants in Orange County and see something at the top of the front page like "Mollie's Country Kitchen" it makes them immediately leave thinking, "I can't believe this blogger thinks that's really Mexican food. I can't trust anything else he has to say."
ReplyDeleteYes! I'm so glad you tried this. The green huevos rancheros are the best breakfast in town, in my opinion. And you were right on going with the half beans/half potatoes. However, I must say I've been disappointed by the non-mexican items on the breakfast menu. It's hard to believe at a place titled Mollies Country Kitchen, but I'd stick to the "south of the border" items. I get the green huevos almost every time now. But one other thing I can recommend is the breakfast burrito with chorizo covered in ranchero sauce. Yum!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is getting a lot of comments. I always get in a dilemma over whether I should order huevos rancheros or chorizo and huevos rancheros usually wins out but now I'll know to try the chorizo there the next time I go.
ReplyDeleteMollie's huevos rancheros are the best I've ever had. I prefer the ranchero sauce over the green sauce but both are great. I was a creature of habit and ordered it every time I went there for several years before going there for dinner and trying some of their other mexican food. It's all excellent. Their ranchero sauce is the secret and they appear to use it or something similar as their
ReplyDeleteenchilada sauce.
I love how this is getting more comments than my reviews of obviously Mexican restaurants.
ReplyDeletejust to add to this longest set of comments - just went for lunch today. Man are those green huevos rancheros good. The chile verde they put on top is excellent with big cubes of tender pork. The guy i went with is a total Mid-Westerner and had a sandwich. That does make this place nice for groups with mixed tastes in food.
ReplyDeleteNo problem leaving more comments, except that it's making me want to go back to Mollie's.
ReplyDeleteThe Carne Asada and eggs plate is wonderful...yummy
ReplyDeleteI think the best restaurants have a line to wait in! Who wants to eat at a place that isn't popular? Not me.. I'd rather wait for good mexican food anyday! How great is Mollie's salsa?
