Just got an e-mail about an open-air produce market that will be running in Los Alamitos every Saturday in June and July. It sounds like they have a lot of exotic stuff and great ingredients to make some homemade salsa with.

I wanted to let you know about Frieda's Fresh Marketplace, a Saturday produce and gourmet food open-air market that's taking place outside our facility in Los Alamitos (near Seal Beach). Our first market is this Saturday, June 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market will take place every Saturday in June and July.

We will have more than 150 varieties of fresh produce, from tropical and exotic fruits (starfruit, tamarillos, longan, mangosteen, rambutan, sapote, fresh pre-peeled whole coconuts, etc.), to gourmet veggies (fresh chiles, treviso, endive, eggplant varieties, cipolline onions, etc.), to dried and jarred pantry items (specialty mushrooms, dried tomatoes, peppers, etc.).

J&P West Coast Seafood (Pete) will be there, as well as an artisan French bread and pasta maker, a fresh flower grower, and our "grower of the week" from Babe' farms. We'll also have cooking demonstrations, lots of free samples, and free coffee and water during the opening market.

Frieda's Inc. is a wholesale marketer and distributor of specialty produce that operates out of its 81,000 square foot facility in Los Alamitos, providing produce and gourmet foods to grocery stores and foodservice distributors around the country and in Canada. This is the first time we've sold products directly to local consumers.

We will also have complimentary coffee and water on Saturday. And we're giving away reusable shopping bags to the first 100 customers.

UPDATE (July 21, 2008): Just received some details about the pending last day for this event:

Saturday, July 26: Last day for Frieda's Fresh Marketplace, an open-air produce and gourmet food market. 4465 Corporate Center Drive, Los Alamitos, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The first 100 shoppers will receive a free basket of raspberries. Additional market highlights include free raffles for produce gift boxes, two free cooking classes with Chef Gregg Denter (MyCulinaryCoach.com), and live music performed by the South Coast Simcha Band.

UPDATE (July 26, 2008): Was able to make it myself on the last day. Once I got there I saw that they had a gourmet tamale stand set up:

One of the workers there said the're thinking of switching to having the open air market once a month now. Expect any pertinent updates to be posted here.
