Now, here's a place that caught my eye: a gas station that has not one but two Mexican restaurants in it and one of those two restaurants appeared to be a spinoff of a restaurant down south. This odd spot is on the northwest corner of the intersection of Harbor Blvd. and Garden Grove Blvd. in the parking lot of a Shell station. And, oh yeah, there's also a Subway in the same building.

DSCF4160

I'd driven past here a number of times but finally stopped by a couple nights ago. As I parked and walked up to the building I saw that the logo for the "Mi Tierra" side looks just like the logo at the El Sabor de Mi Tierra in Laguna Niguel, except that this one is only a juice bar. (If anyone has any information on the connection between the two Mi Tierras please leave a comment.)

DSCF4151

Once inside I went straight to the Mi Tierra side and ordered a berry smoothie. They just call it juice, but it's more like a smoothie, or more properly, a licuado. The workers acted like people don't normally order anything from the juice bar. That might be just because they are new. The large licuado came to $3.76.

DSCF4152

Then I went over to the Nacho Taco side. Being part of a gas station and having a horrendous name like Nacho Taco I was half expecting them to pull a pre-made burrito out of a freezer and microwave it. I saw that they did have what is for all intents and purposes the "Gringo" menu, with enchiladas and burritos, etc.:

DSCF4154

But, to my surprise, they also had a more authentic menu with tacos, tortas, chilaquiles, sopes, and huaraches:

DSCF4155

Their sign with the special for the day said they had menudo so I ordered that but they told me they were out of it. Menudo is not one of those things you can whip up in a couple minutes.

They do, however, have a very good salsa bar (or "condiment bar" might be more appropriate here) with radishes, salsa, escabeche, jalapeños, lime wedges, cucumber chunks and more:

DSCF4156

I ordered a cabeza taco (correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that means the meat for it comes from the cow's cheek). If you're looking to give some off-the-wall Mexican meats a try you might want to start with cabeza, as opposed to lengua, because it's the least off-the-wall as far as taste goes, and, as a cousin of mine said, it kind of tastes like roast beef. The taco came with cilantro and onions and a robust salsa that was more like a thick hot sauce:

DSCF4158

That taco came buy itself but I also ordered a crispy potato taco and an al pastor huarache that came together:

DSCF4159

Another meaning for huarache is "sandal" but I think the two meanings must be related because a huarache (in the food sense) is on a corn tortilla that's shaped just like the sole of a sandal. Then they're topped with your choice of meat, lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes. I'm still alive and in good health while writing this about five days after my visit so these tomatoes were not tainted with salmonella.

The total for my food from Nacho Taco came to $4.60. Makes it worth it to stop by even if you aren't filling up on gas. Or if you would rather put your $4.60 towards food than towards a gallon of gas. It might make a great bike ride destination.

I'm not sure how to rate this place. Do I compare it to other Mexican restaurants that are part of gas stations? What if I've never been to other Mexican restaurants that are part of gas stations? I'd say that my off-the-cuff rating is four Speedy Gonzaleses:

The Back of Azteca in Garden Grove

Question: What do you get when you blend an Elvis museum with a Mexican restaurant?

Answer:
You get Azteca in Garden Grove (not to be confused with the Azteca's mini-chain with locations in Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and Anaheim).

Even though I've put myself on a one-month hiatus of seeking out Mexican restaurants to review I won't turn down offers to meet at one and my cousin Scott recently asked if I'd ever been to Azteca in Garden Grove. Of course I knew about it and had made a quick reference to it almost a year ago but still had never eaten there. Once the invitation came up it was time to go. We arranged to go there with Scott's wife Stacy and another couple, Stephen and Crystal on a recent Friday night.

The Front of Azteca in Garden Grove

After the plans had been made I got a call from James and Lori (mentioned several times on the blog before) asking if I wanted to meet them and Dana at a Mexican restaurant on Friday night. I told them about the plans I had just made and said they were welcome to join us. And then through another twist Chris and Kristanna (also often mentioned at the blog) joined us too. To make a long story short, what was going to be a group of five ended up being a group of eleven . . . and it all worked out.

Elvis Memorabilia at Azteca

As the photos make abundantly clear Azteca is loaded with Elvis Presley memorabilia, so much so that it would be no misnomer to call it an Elvis museum. There are posters, photos, vinyl records, statues, toys, candies, and more. I had already been there for a while before I realized that even the ceiling is covered with Elvis stuff. If they get any more items they will probably have to expand into an adjacent building.

When our party arrived at our reservation time of 7pm we were told by management that the people who were sitting in the table that had been reserved for our large group had been sitting there since 3:30pm and had only ordered a couple drinks and unfortunately didn't look like they were intending to leave anytime soon. (This was near the famous picture of "The President and The King" taken when President Richard Nixon made Elvis Presley an honorary member of the CIA.) Now Scott is half-Samoan and a gentle giant but he can be perceived as intimidating. Knowing this he told the managers that he would handle the situation. He then proceeded to walk over to the table with some sort of plan in mind. Not knowing what was about to happen I stepped outside for a moment to take some pictures of the classic car show that was taking place on Garden Grove's Main Street and when I stepped back in the whole party of table squatters quickly vacating their abode of the prior four hours. After they had all left I asked Scott, "What did you do?" He simply said, "I just stood there." Hey, that works for me. Gandhi would've been proud.

Once we then got our party seated we were served several baskets of chips with salsa that is the first I've ever seen that had Ortega green chile strips in it. As I am wont to do I ordered the huevos rancheros, normally considered a breakfast item but I'll eat it at any time of the day. This one came with a nice chile verde sauce and little chunks of pork. Very hearty and filling. I don't know exactly what the total came to for my food since we were paying as a large group but I chipped in $14 for my huevos rancheros and soda and everyone else seemed fine with that.

Azteca - Huevos Rancheros

The main thing Scott went to get was the famous Garlic Tacos (I believe you can get them with beef or chicken) and he ordered nothing but three of them. No rice, no beans, just three Garlic Tacos. Scott tells about a prior experience at Azteca where a garlic clove in one of the tacos squirted him in the eye as he bit into it, causing tremendous stinging, yet he soldiered on to complete his meal. I had ordered a garlic taco to go along with my huevos rancheros but the taco never showed up. Didn't matter because I got so filled up anyway on the food I did get.

And what Elvis-themed Mexican restaurant would be complete without a statue of the king in a sombrero?

Azteca - Elvis with Sombrero

If you go at the right time you might have the privilege of having an Elvis impersonator perform a card trick at your table. Does anybody have any more information on this?

Azteca earns a three and a half Speedy Gonzales rating for the food and a 4.5 for the atmosphere, averaging out to four:

UPDATE (May 9, 2009):

Went back a couple weeks ago and finally tried the garlic taco. It didn't have garlic cloves in it as I imagined it would but more of a garlic sauce. Good stuff.

I'm hitting another one of those points where I've got a big backlog of reviews to write and not a lot of time to do it so the next four or five reviews might come lightning fast with lots of pictures and not as many words. You'd think that after over 160 reviews here that things would start to slow down but no such luck.

DSCF2688

Taco Joe's is a mysterious greasy spoon place not listed in any online directory except for an oblique reference in Google Maps. I had never heard of it myself until I saw it and I'm not sure I could find it again if I went looking for it. I think you have to stumble on it accidentally.

Perusing their menu for anything unique I noticed they had a chorizo torta. Maybe I don't get out to enough Mexican restaurants but I'd never seen a chorizo torta anywhere before. This beast was served on a large roll with loads of spicy ground beef, refried beans, three fried eggs (or maybe four or five), lettuce, and pico de gallo sauce. This sandwich will definitely fill you up.

Taco Joe's - Chorizo Torta

Before I knew how big the torta was going to be I had also ordered a taco al pastor, basically the Mexican version of pulled barbecued pork, topped with onions, cilantro, and chile verde sauce with a lime quarter on the side. All components were very fresh and overall better than I was expecting from a greasy spoon burger joint.

Taco Joe's earns a 3.25 Speedy Gonzales rating:
