Taco Bell Testing New Breakfast Options

From an e-mail from Taco Bell:

Taco Bell’s new Biscuit Taco is a warm, flakey, golden brown biscuit that happens to be shaped in the form of a taco, served with your choice of classic breakfast favorites (Sausage, Egg and Cheese; or Bacon, Egg and Cheese) or traditional flavors of the South (Crispy Chicken with Country Gravy; or Crispy Chicken with Honey). The Biscuit Taco pays homage to the traditional Southern biscuit – made with real butter and real buttermilk. And for that Taco Bell twist consumers have come to expect, the NEW signature jalapeno honey sauce (served with the Crispy Chicken and Honey Biscuit Taco) delivers just the right amount of heat.

Originally tested in the heart of the biscuit-loving communities of San Antonio, TX and Atlanta, GA, the biscuit taco quickly met the Southern folks’ craveability and the nostalgic homage the taste could provide. The biscuit taco is currently testing in select restaurants within the Orange County / Los Angeles area.

The unsung hero of the current national Taco Bell breakfast menu, the original A.M. Crunchwrap flavors of Steak, Bacon, and Sausage, will now be joined by the A.M. California Crunchwrap and A.M. Country Crunchwrap. Both bring flavor depth and variety to the already-popular platform, taking sit-down breakfast favorites like the California omelet and Country Skillet with Gravy and Sausage and making them portable.

o The A.M. California Crunchwrap is filled with bacon, hashbrown, eggs, guacamole, cheddar cheese and pico de gallo.

o The A.M. Country Crunchwrap is filled with sausage, hashbrown, eggs, classic gravy and cheddar cheese.

New Taco Bell Beverages

Okay, I haven't posted anything in a while, and I do have more stuff coming, but just to get something new up pretty quick I'll post this press release I just got from Taco Bell:

Taco bell® embarks on largest expansion of beverage menu in company history with six UNIQUE flavors

As the First National Quick Service Restaurant to Offer Manzanita Sol®, Taco Bell Brings Fans More PepsiCo® Beverage Options at Select Restaurants Including: SoBe® Lifewater™ Yumberry Pomegranate, Mtn Dew Sangrita Blast, Diet Mtn Dew® Baja Blast and More
IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 17, 2014 – The brand that brought its fans exclusive products like Mtn Dew® Baja Blast™ and Doritos® Locos Tacos is about to help beverage buffs “Live Más®” even more while they sip.
With a 51-year history of Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) industry firsts, Taco Bell® announces yet another as the first national QSR to offer the crisp apple-flavored “Manzanita Sol®” – a classic flavor that has crossed borders. This will also be the first time that “Diet Mtn Dew® Baja Blast™” and the citrus-infused punch of “Mtn Dew Sangrita Blast” have ever been offered in any form.
The brand’s PepsiCo® partnership – a collaboration that has led to Taco Bell being one of Mountain Dew’s largest national customers – continues with six new beverages being added at select locations starting immediately and expanding nationally through 2014. The three new carbonated soft drinks are: “Manzanita Sol®,” “Diet Mtn Dew® Baja Blast™” and “Mtn Dew Sangrita Blast.” The three non-carbonated drinks include two bold flavors from Brisk: the tropically-inspired “Brisk® Mango Fiesta,” and a new refreshing mix combining Brisk Iced Tea and Lemonade, as well as zero-calorie and nutrient-enhanced “SoBe® Lifewater™ Yumberry Pomegranate.” Suggested prices will be $1.39 (16 oz.), $1.49 (20 oz.), $1.69 (30 oz.) and $1.79 (40 oz.) at participating locations.
“We hear how fanatic our customers are about Mtn Dew Baja Blast, and this inspires us to continue introducing exciting and exclusive beverages to Taco Bell fans,” said Taco Bell Chief Marketing Officer, Chris Brandt. “Beverages – like many of our food items – can be enjoyed on-the-go, which fits our fans’ lifestyle to get more out of every day. We really want to develop beverages that are as unique, tasty and portable as our food.”
A key element in the brand’s ongoing 10-year growth plan to double the business, these new flavors and Taco Bell’s continued innovation in specialty beverages extend the snacking day part for the brand. To that end, the brand also launched Happier Hour® in 2013 – $1 Loaded Grillers, medium beverages and regular Freezes from 2-5 p.m. at participating locations – and this value offering will continue for Taco Bell fans in 2014.

New Taco Bell Cantina Steak Burrito

Okay, there's more restaurant reviews coming even though it's been a while (getting a post ready about a place that has locations in Huntington Beach and Anaheim) and it might be kind of lazy to post Taco Bell news but I wanted to post something and they just sent me some news. I try to post what I get and I think this is the first time Taco Bell has actually sent me something. If you want me to post something about your restaurant then send it on in: reviews@ocmexfood.com. You don't have to be a corporate giant. You just have to be selling Mexican food in Orange County.

Also, I do like that Taco Bell (yes, that Taco Bell) is trying to be more authentic, that they've hired an accomplished Latina chef and are willing to take input from her. It's Taco Bell and we all know what that means but they are trying. And that counts for something. The promo images here even showcase "Lorena Garcia" more than "Taco Bell." Actually they don't mention Taco Bell at all. That's a courageous move for them. It's like, if you want to get Chef Lorena Garcia's food then you can go to her restaurant . . . which just so happens to be in that place that's all over the place. Anyways... they've just introduced this new Cantina Bell Steak Burrito. From the video below it looks like they put some effort into making it turn out right yet still quick and easy to make for a wide audience. Let us know if you try one and I'll update here if I'm able to grab one soon.

Here's some of the press release info from them:

ABOUT THE NEW STEAK & CANTINA STEAK BURRITO
As part of Taco Bell’s commitment to quality and listening to consumers, this new steak is the latest menu item to Cantina Bell, which was launched nationally in 2012. Taco Bell also introduces the NEW Cantina Steak Burrito featuring this all-new tender-braised thick-cut steak marinated in Chef Lorena’s signature recipe in addition to premium Latin rice, flavorful black beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, roasted corn & pepper salsa, romaine lettuce and a creamy cilantro dressing, all wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.

Through our latest YouTube video, you can see how Chef Lorena Garcia and the Taco Bell team tested nine different versions of the steak in order to bring out the best balance in flavors and texture.

QUOTE FROM LORENA
“One of the pillars for the Cantina Bell menu is the balance in flavors and contrast in textures. There are so many components that need to be right to make it the best possible steak,” says Chef Lorena Garcia. “When I started working on perfecting the steak, I knew we had a long way to go. Sometimes it was too deep, too spicy or overwhelming. I really wanted to find that flavor that is so unique to the Latin culture. We went back and forth on many things from consistency and tenderness, to the cut and marinade. After nine rounds, we got the steak just right and are excited to introduce Taco Bell’s best steak ever!”

ABOUT THE CANTINA BELL MENU
Cantina Bell provides Taco Bell customers with an expanded menu of quality options at a great value—plus with the convenience of a drive-thru. The complete menu includes a Cantina Bowl or Cantina Burrito with either the all new marinated thick-cut steak or 100% all-white chicken, guacamole, cilantro rice, fire-roasted corn salsa, cilantro dressing, black beans, romaine lettuce and pico de gallo. Side combinations include: chips and pico de gallo or fire-roasted corn salsa, or chips and guacamole.

ADVERTISING DETAILS
Viewers tuning into pre-game of the Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3 can see a new Taco Bell spot, “Grande Papi,” which features the New Cantina Bell Steak Burrito and uses a Spanish version of the 1994 hit song "Big Poppa."

Additionally, two spots “Finally” (TV, Radio) and “Start Over” (TV) will air in W2; Hispanic versions will also air.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THIS IS HAPPENING: COOL Ranch Doritos® locos tacoS TO arrive in taco bell® restaurants MARCH 7

Fans Asked For It – and Now Taco Bell’s Most Successful Menu Item Ever
Will be Joined by Fan-Favorite Cool Ranch

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 13, 2013 – When Taco Bell® launched Doritos® Locos Tacos in 2012, it quickly became the company’s most successful product launch ever, selling more than 350 million in less than a year. While Taco Bell lovers couldn’t get enough of the Doritos Nacho Cheese taco shell combined with the company’s classic crunchy taco ingredients, it wasn’t long before fans turned to social media and asked “when is Doritos Cool Ranch coming?”
On March 7, 2013, Doritos Cool Ranch fans won’t have to wait any longer. Today Taco Bell announced it will launch another soon-to-be blockbuster Doritos flavor to the Doritos Locos Tacos line-up: Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos. The announcement was made today directly to Taco Bell’s most ardent fans across social and digital media channels, and via a six-second Vine video announcement, the first-ever product announcement made by Taco Bell using the Vine platform.
“There has been enormous interest in the new Cool Ranch flavor of Doritos Locos Tacos and people are wondering why it took so long,” said Greg Creed, chief executive officer, Taco Bell Corp. “Originally we had planned to launch the Cool Ranch flavor in the same year as the introduction of Doritos Locos Tacos. However, the demand for Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Tacos was so strong that we worked closely with our partner Frito-Lay to increase our capacity and meet the needs of both Doritos Cool Ranch and Nacho Cheese fans.”
Taco Bell plans to support the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos launch with its largest marketing campaign in history, topping the launch of the original Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Tacos. Specific details of the marketing campaign will be released in the coming weeks. To gain consumer feedback and ensure the taco shell delivered on the same Cool Ranch taste and crunch consumers expect from Doritos, Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos were tested in select restaurants in Toledo, Ohio for more than six months. To join in the conversation and keep in-the-know about Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos, fans can tweet @TacoBell using #CoolRanchDLT and by staying tuned to youtube.com/tacobell.
About Cool Ranch Doritos® Locos Tacos
Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos features a shell made out of Doritos Cool Ranch chips on the outside, filled with the classic tastes of the Taco Bell crunchy taco on the inside: 100 percent premium seasoned beef, crisp shredded lettuce and real cheddar cheese. Available exclusively at participating Taco Bell restaurants nationwide beginning March 7, 2013, the suggested retail price for the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos is $1.39 (160 calories; 10g total fat) and $1.69 for a Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos Supreme (200 calories; 12g total fat) with reduced-fat sour cream and diced tomatoes. A Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos $5 Buck Box will include a Doritos Locos Taco Supreme, Burrito Supreme®, Crunchy Taco and a medium fountain drink. For people looking for lower-calorie, lower-fat options, Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos will be available Fresco Style with 140 calories and 7g total fat. UPDATE (Late late March 8): Oh, man, this nutty Doritos taco saga just isn't ending. One of my brothers texted me about an hour ago and asked if I knew that I had been on TV. I thought he was just talking about seeing footage on the Register website but it turns out that that footage made it to Jon Stewart's Daily Show on Comedy Central where my statement at the launch party last night was featured as the nightly "Moment of Zen:"
My take on this is that I had actually had these tacos about a year and a half ago so I already knew what they were like and you can see below what my description is. The long and the short of it is that these things are Taco Bell tacos where the shell tastes like a Doritos chip. That is it. If you know what both of those taste like then you know what this new taco taste likes. So, a few days ago Nancy invited me to the launch party and I figured I would go. Two free tacos? Sure, I'll stoop to that. Free t-shirts and beanies at the end? Yeah, I'm fine with that too. When I arrived a videographer from The Register came up to me and said that she was planning on taping me taking my first bite and then asking me what I thought of it. This scared me in several different ways: First, I don't do well even for still photos so I am even worse on video; second, I had already tried these before so I already knew what they tasted like; and, third, there really is not that much to say about them. But then the videographer took off and I got occupied with the whole festive atmosphere there. I talked to some of the Taco Bell reps too and they were all very nice and one of them even asked me if I knew of any good Mexican restaurants around. It was very refreshing to see that they don't think of Taco Bell as the end-all and be-all of Mexican food because I always had the impression before that that is how they thought.
A while later when the tacos were being served I got my taco and started opening it up when the Register's video person came back to me and said, "Wait! I need to get video of you taking your first bite." So I ended up like a deer caught in the headlights. I really didn't know what to say. After I took my first bite and they asked me how it was I blurted out, "It's like the biggest Doritos chip ever." Actually they took more video than that but that's what ended up on The Daily Show so that's all that really matters. I guess I inadvertently created a zen moment.
If you're a Mexican restaurant in Orange County and you want me to provide strangely profound commentary on your food then I am open to it. I just prefer to do it in writing next time. The real star of the video above is that Matt Bustamante guy.

UPDATE (Early early March 8): Just got back from the official launch party held at a Taco Bell location in the city of Orange. The party was sponsored by Nancy Luna, the famous Fast Food Maven blogger and reporter for The Orange County Register. About 50 of her invited guests were able to come and sample the new, inventive taco two hours before its launch to the general public at a rare midnight unveiling. Goodies such as t-shirts, beanies and key chains were also given out. For now only the Nacho Cheese kind is available but the Cool Ranch variety is expected to be released later this year. See Nancy's coverage of this event here where it is hinted that other Doritos flavors in addition to Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch may be used as Taco Bell taco shells in the future.
Cost: $1.29 for regular or $1.69 for supreme.

Here's the update from July 25, 2011: The Taco Bell near me that tries out test items is now selling Doritos Locos tacos again, this time with the much-fantasized about "Cool Ranch" version (seriously, do a search and you'll see a bunch of sites where people talk about how they heard Taco Bell was trying out a taco with a shell made out of Nacho Cheese Doritos and then they go on to talk about how awesome it'd be if they made a Cooler Ranch version . . . but then they also go on to talk about how that will probably never happen; well, it's happened):

IMG01513-20110725-2207

You might ask if they are good. The answer to that is: yes, if you like eating Taco Bell tacos and then munching on Doritos right after that. Now your eating habits will be more efficient. It's like when Will Ferrell was asked at the beginning of "Land of the Lost" why he was eating a doughnut with M&M's on it. His reply? "This way I don't have to eat M&M's when I'm done with my doughnut." So, you see, it all makes perfect sense. My prediction is that Taco Bell's next taco will already have the Pepsi or the Mountain Dew in it. (UPDATE: have found out that there was a Doritos flavor called X-12 before that was actually Mountain Dew flavor so maybe my idea will happen if they use those as taco shells later.)

IMG00343-20100911-1703

Soooo... back in September 2010 I'm driving by a Taco Bell and see a poster at their drive-thru menu board for Doritos Locos Tacos. I pull in, take a picture of the poster, try one of the tacos, mention it on Twitter and then never hear about the item again. Now in April 2011 the web is abuzz with everyone talking about these crazy things as though it's a brand new thing. Apparently somebody else even mentioned it a couple months before I did so I wasn't the first one but now these things are appearing at Taco Bells in Ohio and people are making videos of it and creating Facebook fan pages for it, etc. I guess when an item goes this viral then it's time for Taco Bell to put it in all their stores.

IMG00344-20100911-1715

And what's my verdict on the Doritos taco shell at Taco Bell? If I remember it correctly from eight months ago I think I kind of liked it. If you want powdery, spicy stuff all over the outside of your taco and all over your fingers then track this puppy down. And for now that could mean going to Ohio (unless somebody can point out where it can be found behind the Orange Curtain). And, yes, it'd be interesting to see them do this with other Doritos flavors, such as "new" taco flavor in the retro bag:

Barbacoa Items at Taco Bell

Barbacoa items at Taco Bell

Taco Bell seems to be continuing their trend of adding more "authentic" items to their menu or at least items that have some sort of semblance to "authentic" Mexican food items. Whether they should try to or not is a different matter. Some will say, "Hey, let them give it a shot," while others will say, "Taco Bell makes plastic, mass-produced food that can hardly pass as 'Mexican' and they should stay that way and not even attempt to pass themselves off as an authentic taqueria."

As for me, I don't really care. I currently live near a Taco Bell that experiments with test items so I tend to give each one a try. Some items end up making it to every Taco Bell while some are a flash in the pan that I see once and never see anywhere again (i.e., the "International Tacos," the "Doritos Tacos," etc.). Their newest attempt is a line of barbacoa items, a food which itself has Caribbean origins. You can get a barbacoa soft taco, quesadilla, or burrito. I tried the quesadilla and it did have a smoky, tangy flavor to it and very tender shredded beef, although the cheese inside was hardly melted. Just don't call it "barracuda" if you order it. I actually heard somebody ask for a "barracuda burrito" at Chipotle before.

Barbacoa Quesadilla from Taco Bell

As with their Cantina Tacos I wouldn't say to get these when you're able to get better Mexican food elsewhere. But if you're hungry and a Taco Bell is the closest place to eat be aware that there's some new options out there . . . at some Taco Bells . . . and maybe for a limited time only.

UPDATE (April 4, 2011): Here's the new poster they are using for these items:

Taco Bell Authentic Tacos

July 29, 2010: See update near bottom of this entry.

(Greetings to all the people coming from Nancy Luna's Fast Food Maven blog on the OC Register site and from Burger Business. After you're done reading this entry click around the site for plenty of information about Mexican food and restaurants in Orange County. There's links all over to help you out.)

Aaaahh . . . Taco Bell, that punching bag of all things Mexican, the chain that gets all the calumny, scorn, and defamation a place can get for being "fake Mexican;" the purveyor of such clearly non-authentic items as the Pizzazz (now called "Mexican pizza" and not as good as it used to be), the Enchirito, the Crispitos, the Snackitos, the Munchitos, the Crunchwrap Supreme, the MexiMelt, and more; the chain that gets accused of creating "fake Mexican" items like gorditas and chalupas when gorditas and chalupas actually did originate in Mexico; the chain that mass-produces what it only officially claims to be "Mexican-inspired" food for thousands, perhaps millions, of people, including Mexicans, every day throughout the world.

IMGP0028

The cognoscenti have a heyday reviling Taco Bell as the worst of the worst of all inauthentic Mexican places. But, seriously, isn't it just way too easy of a target? They aren't trying to trick anybody into thinking they are the independent little taco stand hiding out deep in Santa Ana, so, personally, I don't see any attempt at "fooling the public" by corporate Taco Bell that I have to psychologically steel myself against.

When Taco Bell gets branded as inauthentic I'll sometimes retort with, "Believe me, I know where you're coming from, but I still see Taco Bell as way more Mexican than Panda Express." Having said that, there's still no escaping the fact that Taco Bell is on the low end of the authenticity spectrum. But I did just receive a tip from an unexpected source that the "Test Bell" at Redhill and the 5 was testing "authentic tacos." (UPDATE: I have also seen them on sale at the Taco Bell at Warner and Grand in Santa Ana.) Having had no breakfast and being open to an early lunch I headed out there and found that these things really are called "Authentic Tacos:"

IMGP0027

Available in chicken or steak (sorry, no lengua, cabeza, sesos, etc. although it should be easy for them to pull off something like an al pastor taco), foil-wrapped with no Taco Bell insignia to be seen, served on two corn tortillas, topped with cilantro and onions, rather than lettuce and tomatoes, served with a lime wedge, and no cheese, it'd be easy to get these mixed up with truly authentic tacos from numerous authentic stands. It also helped that they passed my no-gristle test.

IMGP0029

I even squeeze some of the leftover lime juice into my Mountain Dew Baja Blast (when I go inside a Taco Bell I like to make a concoction that is roughly three parts Mirinda brand strawberry soda and one part Baja Blast). And here's the first picture I've taken with my brand new camera set to "Food" mode, with a chicken and a steak "authentic taco" and one of the new 89¢ grilled chicken burritos:

IMGP0031

Am hoping that my new camera will be taking better dim light photos than my prior camera did.

And, this Tustin location still has the Fiesta Family Meal:

IMGP0026

And they also still have the Munchitos that I mentioned quite a while back:

IMGP0028

If you're looking for "Test Bells" that have items not on regular Taco Bell menus the four I know of are this one in Irvine, this one in Tustin, this one in Santa Ana, and this one in Lake Forest.

Also, most Taco Bells seem to now have the new Piña Colada and Strawberry Colada Frutista Freeze beverages:

Oh, and limeade and cherry limeade Frutista drinks and three kinds of double chicken burritos:

IMGP0195

UPDATE: The limeades are now 99¢ for a medium and $1.29 for a large, marked down drastically from the prices shown in the photo above.

UPDATE (July 28, 2009): It appears that the "Authentic Tacos" are now called "Cantina Grill Cantina Tacos" and have, like the limeade, been drastically reduced in price from $1.89 to $1.29:

IMGP0584

UPDATE (July 29, 2010): The Taco Bell at Red Hill and the 5 now has Slow Roasted Pork Carnitas Tacos:

Taco Bell Platters

Have noticed that people are going nuts searching on "taco bell platter prices." I thought they were referring to several recent Taco Bell items with similar names, but apparently there are some brand new Taco Bell platters now. Due to the heavy demand for info on these products I rolled out of bed this morning at 11am (ok, not really) and drove a whopping three-quarters of a mile away to the nearest Taco Bell and ordered me a Spicy Chicken Enchilada Platter for $4.99:

DSCF6069

The other option is a Beef Soft Taco Supreme Platter. In addition to their main item the platters come with Spanish rice, refried beans, chips and salsa.

Taco Bell Platters Official Site

This location is also testing a Family Fiesta Meal (at least I don't think it's at all their locations), which appears to be a kit with taco fixins' that you take home then make your tacos with. It's like having a Taco Bell franchise in your own kitchen (do homes have kitchens anymore?):

DSCF6065

And they have a new Strawberry Lemonade Frutista Freeze:

The new Black Jack Taco has a black shell, seasoned ground beef, and zesty pepperjack sauce. Click here for more info.

Chili Fritos Items

April 20, 2009: The test restaurant in Irvine on Barranca now has a Chili Fritos bowl and a Chili Fritos Burrito. Yes, it is Fritos brand corn chips that are inside each.

Three Types of Nachos

Bacon Cheddar Gordita Crunch

Taco Bell's new item as of January 2, 2009 is their Bacon Cheddar Gordita Crunch with lots of bacon, a soft taco shell, a crispy taco shell, ground beef, and melted cheese. This item even has its own website with ingredient listing and nutritional info and it cost me $2.49 for one.

Snackitos

Just got back (Dec. 17, 2008) from a Taco Bell test restaurant and they had some new items called Snackitos. There are three kinds: Nachos, Loaded Potato, and Spicy Buffalo.

DSCF5777
Yes, this picture was taken in the rain.

DSCF5778
But this one wasn't

As of January 2, 2009 the Snackitos seem to have been removed from the menu.

Fully Loaded Nachos, Tortadas and More

Went for lunch today (Nov. 17, 2008) to try out the new Taco Bell Fully Loaded Nachos that I've been seeing ads for but got sidetracked when I saw that there is now, at least at the test restaurant that happens to be near where I live, a new Fire-Grilled Chicken menu with a tortada (a word I've never heard before), a taco, and a burrito.

DSCF5457

I got the tortada and the taco. The tortada is kind of like a cross between a burrito and a tostada. Both items I got had the same ingredients with the difference being that the tortada came in a bigger, toasted tortilla. UPDATE (January 2, 2009): When I went back to this same Taco Bell location earlier today their fire-grilled chicken menu changed to just having three types of tacos. No more tortada or burrito apparently. UPDATE (March 11, 2009): All of a sudden people have started doing a lot of searches for "taco bell tortada." I thought that Taco Bell had tested it and decided not to take it beyond test stores but now that everyone's searching for it I'm going to try to find out if it's been brought back. If anyone has any information on this please leave a comment.

Here's the updated Fire-Grilled Chicken Tacos menu:

DSCF5869

(If anybody knows the price for the Fully Loaded Nachos please leave a comment here and tell what city you found them in. The cost for them at my Taco Bell is $3.99 and you can make it a combo for a dollar more, which adds a large drink. Good deal considering the regular price of their small drinks is $1.19.)
IMPORTANT NOTE (If you do not read this note you are likely to not find all the information you are looking for): This one entry is only one of our many entries on new items at Taco Bell. You can read our complete Taco Bell coverage all at once by CLICKING HERE. My site traffic tells me people do not see that link no matter how obvious I make it, which means that visitors here are not getting all the information they are looking for.

Taco Bell New Menu Items

While driving around yesterday and driving past a couple Taco Bells I noticed that they have a new Triple Steak Burrito:

and a new Frutista Creme drink:

Went later at dinnertime and tried out the Triple Berries ‘n Crème Frutista Freeze and found it nice and refreshing and even a little dessert-like (somebody check the calorie count on this). In fact, after I ordered it then a taco and some nachos the guy taking my order said, "Would you like a drink with that?" I said, "I already ordered a drink." "Oh . . . oh, yeah. That's right." Couldn't blame him since these definitely straddle the line between beverage and dessert.

Taco Bell Melts and Volcano Menu

IMPORTANT NOTE: Read whole entry for all pertinent info.

Stopped by Taco Bell earlier today for a quick cheap meal. I'd seen ads about their new "melts" lately so I thought I'd finally try one of those (they are like a burrito with more cheese and no beans) but also saw that, at least at the location on Barranca in Irvine, that they also have new fajita tacos, fajita burritos, and fajita platters as well as a "Volcano Menu," with a Volcano Double Beef Burrito, a Volcano Taco (in a red corn shell), and a Volcano Crunchwrap (with or without chicken). As of today their official site does not mention the fajita items or the Volcano items, but doing some exploring on the Internet I found that the Volcano Burrito has been on their menu before. Some guy even made some fake ads for it and the Wikipedia entry on Taco Bell mentions that the Volcano Burrito appeared as "a special promotion in conjunction with the 1995 film Congo."

Volcano Menu

UPDATE: Here's a picture of the new items:

I should add that people seem to be searching for this "Volcano Menu" stuff more and more so maybe it's making its way out of the test markets. More information at the Fast Food Maven blog and at Nibbles of Tidbits. If you try a Volcano Taco leave a comment here with your thoughts on it.

UPDATE: As of April 20, 2009, the Volcano Burrito is still available at the Irvine store on Barranca.

UPDATE (March 11, 2009): Just went back to this Taco Bell test restaurant again and they seem to have introduced Volcano Nachos:

UPDATE (May 14, 2009): Wow, people have really been searching a lot on "volcano double beef burrito." Turns out that the Volcano Menu has spread now to pretty much every Taco Bell and there's also a Volcano Big Box meal. It even has its own Official Site.

UPDATE (June 8, 2009): Word on the blogosphere is that a new Volcano Menu item is coming to Taco Bell in August.

UPDATE (July 28, 2009): Stay tuned for info on the return of Volcano Nachos. Some people are also hoping for the Volcano Crunchwrap to return. If anyone has pictures of these items or their related promotional materials send 'em in. reviews@ocmexfood.com

UPDATE (July 30, 2009): The Volcano Nachos are now being mentioned on the Volcano Menu website, so they are probably at all Taco Bells now.

UPDATE (August 6, 2009): Just got some Volcano Nachos myself and the cost was $3.49. If anybody sees them for a different price elsewhere leave a comment here.
