Dick Naugle Says: Bring My Food Back to Del Taco!

Judging by the enormous reaction in the Naugles, RIP entry posted elsewhere on this blog, where people have left comments detailing their memories of and longing for food from the old Naugles Mexican fast food chain, I think we have enough of a basis to petition Del Taco to bring back some of the Naugles items (and the logo).

Naugles was actually begun by a Del Taco employee (Dick Naugles) and then about 18 years later was purchased by Del Taco. For a brief period the former Naugles locations were co-branded as Del Taco and Naugles but they eventually all became just Del Tacos. The former Naugles menu has influenced the current Del Taco menu in the form of its Macho items such as the Macho Nachos but many people still crave several Naugles items that are no longer available, especially the cheese burrito and the Naugleburger (the root beer shake mentioned by one commenter sounds good too).

Now the current president and CEO of Del Taco, Shirlene Lopez, is herself a former Naugles employee (talk about irony!) and she has stated in a recent issue of OC Metro that she plans on introducing innovative new menu items for 2008. With all of the points of intersection that Del Taco and Naugles have had over the years maybe the best way to rev up the Del Taco menu would be to bring back the unique Naugles items. People love it, people want it, and people will buy it. I don't see any drawbacks. It won't create competition for Del Taco since people would be purchasing the Naugles items from Del Taco. This would be a win/win situation.

If you have any thoughts on the matter or would like to add your name to this petition please leave a comment here.

(We have 6 entries on Naugles, each with different information. Click the 'naugles' label below to read more. Why do I have this information here? It is because we have more info about Naugles than just what's in this one entry and I see all the time that people look for info on Naugles but don't then CLICK HERE to read more about it, and we have lots more info about it.)

  2. My wife and I used to visit Naugles a lot, and preferred it over Del Taco. In Lake Forest, there was a Naugles on the NW corner of El Toro Rd and Trabuco Rd, and a Del Taco on the NE corner. Then they became both Del Tacos.

Such a long time since I ate at a Naugles, I can't remember the menu. I do remember after all the Naugles in SoCal were converted over to Del Taco, I managed to find another Naugles in Reno, NV, and relished the food one last time. I guess that one's gone too now.

  3. Holy crap am I happy that naugles menu items may return to the del taco menu. My beloved naugles was closed down in 1988 and I've missed it ever since. They replaced it with a del taco and still had naugles items on the menu but they were not kept very long. I think that if del taco brings back naugles items they would be a big hit and I would start going back to del taco!!!

  8. I came home from college driving 3 1/2 hours to get a green burrito back in 1987, drove up to the drive thru and waited. After several minutes I pulled up to the window to read a sorry were closed sign. I think a little piece of me died that day! Please for the love of God bring back the Naugles burrito! It's been over 20 years and I stiil need one! I live in Indiana but I have family in California. I will visit my family out there more often if I can sink my teeth into one of those burritos one more time. What the heck, bring back the Naugles burrito and I'll move the whole family out!

  9. Oh how I miss the Naugle Burger !! I lived in Barstow from '82 until
'92 and really liked that, their taco salad and their steak quesadillas. I live back in Ohio now and have said for the past 15 years "how I wish there were a Del Taco or a Naugles here"

  10. I remember back in the 80s looking forward to payday so i could buy a Naugleburger and frys and shake!,..it was one of my after you cash your paycheck stops,. it would be soo aewsume to bring back Naugles!thay dont belong as relic of the 80s with the B52s and Duran Duran!,.. bring them back to the here and now!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Just a note that the B52s and Duran Duran are still around . . . and they both started in the 1970s.

  12. I went to Victorville CA in 1972, and I learned fast mexican food at Naugles. We also had a Del Taco, but the flavors at Naugles were the best to me. I moved back to South Carolina in 1976 and had no fast Mexican until Del Taco appeared in the early 1980's. They were good, but they were not as good as Naugles. My dad actually brought me Naugles burritos from Phoenix later in the 80's, and it was my last taste of a memory (that I still crave).

In the 90's, Del Taco sold out it's franchise rights in the southeast, and we were left with nothing but Taco Bell, my least favorite of all. Please do our taste buds a favor, dump the pride and bring back Naugles recipes. Then bring it all back to the southeast.

  15. Combo green burrito and the good ol bag of hot fries..bring back to Wisconsin

  16. I rememeber as a kid riding my bike to Naugles and getting the bean tostada or the bean and cheese burrito (which were much larger then you get at Del Taco). The best part of the whole meal was the hot taco sauce that came in little cups with the pull back strip. The stuff was so hot that at times I had to rub my lips with ice. Bring back Naugles and the HOT sauce!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks for the comment. Just a note that ice does almost nothing to get rid of hotness on your lips and in your mouth from eating spicy food. You need a dairy product like milk, or ice cream, or a shake to do the trick.

    ReplyDelete
  18. They had a delicious item...cant remember the name...it came in a cup with taco meat, beans, cheese, taco sauce, with chips on the side to dunk...yum

And of course the cheese burritos and the taco cups.

    Please bring them back.

  19. Bring back the REAL MACHO NACHOS ! The ones Naugles made. They were the bomb ! Del Taco has "Macho Nachos" but they are regular nachos. Naugles Macho Nachos after midnight RULE !

    ReplyDelete
  20. Bring back the Naugle Burger, It was one of a kind. The shreded lettuce, two beef patties, the cheese, and a tomatoe. It was awesome. I use to eat these on my lunch breaks. I worked right across the parkinglot from them. They are delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The first time I tryed eating refried beans (cause I thought they looked gross) was at Naugles on 14st in Riverside, CA. Loveddddddddddddddddddd their GREEN Burritos and long for a normal sized burrito since they left. If Del Taco turned back into Naugles they'd have to triple there beans in a large size tortilla. Del Tacos normal sized green bean burrito is a joke (mostly rubbery tortilla)!!!
Naugles also had great macho nachos you could actually get full sharing it with someone.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I went to Naugles regularly in Huntington Beach (it was on Gothard Street, north of Edinger). They had a burger made with seasoned ground beef (loose not a patty) that they sprinked a bunch of shredded cheese and lettuce on. It was extremely good. They also had the best taco salad of any fast food. I have little to no confidence that Del Taco will be able to pull this off. They should bring back Naugles, at least on a pilot basis. PS - There is a similar place in Washtington called "Taco Time". It has a few similar items. Not in CA though.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If you had clicked on the 'naugles' label in this post you would've seen an entry describing how you can still get that ground beef burger you described.

Also, why do you have little to no confidence that Del Taco can bring back the Naugles food? It wouldn't be any harder than bringing out any other new product or bringing back an old Del Taco product (which they have done in the past).

Lastly, there is at least one Taco Time in California.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I clicked on the Naugles label. It is an intriguing idea and I will try it. I am thinking that Naugles drizzled their special taco sauce on all their items, which gave it a tastiness that Del Taco could never have. Naugles was also, as a policy or culture, much more generous with their cheddar cheese. This makes me think that my "bun taco" experiment will be ok, but not as good as I remember.

Taco time: 68 Ramona Expy, Perris, CA 92571. Thanks for the tip. It is 96 miles from where I live (a little far for lunch) but its actually only 10 minutes from my in-laws.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The point to ordering the bun taco now is that it will wave a flag to Del Taco letting them know that people want Naugles food. And it's not entirely impossible for them to bring back some more of the Naugles items.

There is also a Taco Time on Katella I think somewhere between Euclid and Harbor in Garden Grove.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Naugles on 14th St., Riverside, CA. That was one of my favorite Riverside eateries. I tried to eat there at least once per week in '78-'80, the burritos were fabulous! It was a great place with great food for a guy on a limited income.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Bring back the Taco Salad cups and the Taco Meat Sandwiches (my two favorites). I have missed them!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. My boyfriennd and I were just talking about how we misss the macho combo buritto. I can hardly wait for the return!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. The taco meat sandwiches are still available. For information click on the "naugles" label in this entry.

  30. I went to Cypress College in the early 80's and a group of us used to go to the Naugles on Lincoln Ave. in Cypress. The best!!! If they brought it back, what a money maker it would be!

  31. I am Very excited to hear that Del Taco is bringing back some of the Naugles Food. I miss Naugles alot! I use to eat there all the time when I was a kid. I really would love it if they brought back Naugles. I definatly Perfered it over Del Taco. Naugles Was Way Way Better. They need to bring back all there Spicy Green Burritoes with the Green Sauce on it. Bethany

  32. Thanks for your comment. At this point we don't know if the Naugles food will come back. What we are trying to do here is show Del Taco that there is PLENTY of support for it.

  33. I remember me and my friend Dixie driving through the drive thru of Naugles in Mission Viejo after a night of dancing at Bobby McGee's. We always had the cheese Burrito with green sauce. It was to die for, the perfect way to finish up a Saturday night.

    ReplyDelete
  34. My friends and I were recently in Barstow at the original Del Taco. We had this discussion on the most awesome taco salad being the Naugles Taco Salad in the little cup!!! I need the recipe badly!!! Anybody got it? Please send it to me if you can. Thanks

  35. OMG!!! I so miss Naugles and their Cheese Burriots!! They were da bomb!! Please bring it back to Missouri!

  36. What about the late night/early morning Egg Burrito? I recall it having green sauce on it and lots of cheese.

Does anybody remember the receipt or ticket tab with a picture of Mr. Naugle?

    Dick Naugle Say's -:
    - Server food fresh
    - Keep place clean

We laughed because the burrito's where so big many HS kids threw the remains at the brick wall side of Naugles and they stuck! They also trashed the parking lot. It was a site when the sun came up in the morning and I ordered my favorite Egg Burrito. It was the Tustin, CA Naugles.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks for the comment. Have you seen our two other entries on Naugles?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, please bring back Naugles. I am always telling people I have not had a burrito as good as the ones I used to buy at Naugles when I lived in Tampa, FL. I'd love to be able to go to Naugles in Indianapolis, IN, and in central NJ in Sicklerville or Berlin or Turnersville area.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The was a Naugles (now a Del Taco) on Artesia Blvd. in Artesia, CA in the 80's that was a hang out late at night for many Cerritos High School students. After a party or if there was no place to go, a lot of people would just end up at Naugles. For us, this was much like the old diners of the 1950's and 60's. However, instead of fast cars it was loud cars. This hang out is a lasting memory for me and many others. I will surely forward this blog to as many people as possible. Please bring back Naugles, it will make money!

I worked for Naugles in 3 locations, 2 in Orange, one in Fullerton. I also worked for Del Taco before Naugles. Naugles food was superior, by far, to all of Del Tacos. Everything was so fresh. If I remember correctly, fresh cooked taco meat every 20 minutes. Every shift meant a HUGE fresh pot of beans, mashed by hand.

My favorite menu items were the Tortilla Con Queso (cheese burrito) with green sauce and sour cream, the Ort~Egg sandwich, bomb!!! (Egg, shredded cheese, green chilies and tomato on a toasted HB bun) And of course the Hot Fudge Shake. Mmnnnn

I did double shifts often and would hear the drive thru bell in my sleep. "1 Combo, make it Macho" I felt like such a dufus the first day on the job calling that out. We had so many regulars, we would start preparing some of their meals as soon as we saw them. The cops loved our food and ate for free. Officer (Rodriquez?) OPD, 1982 ish, Egg, bean and cheese burritos, graveyard shift. Thanks for showing me mercy. Those free burritos ended up being my stay out of jail card one night. Lol

No one wants to make that either.

  69. Naugles in Colton had CONSISTANT top quality food. I travel now and find Del Taco food quality VERY inconsistant (store to store,AND cook to cook), with an occasional approach to Naugels quality. I don't have a clue how to fix it, just an observation in case anyone important might read this and be able to improve it.

My version of heaven will have a Colton Naugles just a short walk away.......

  70. I miss all there Food at Naugles. I use to get there Green Burritoe's all the time. And sometimes there Green Tacos. I use to go to the on ein Fenton Missouri all the time Cause I lived there. I still live in St.Louis but somewhere else in St.Louis.

  71. I grew up in Lancaster and we had a Naugles on Ave I and Del Taco up on Sierra Highway. The difference was a lot!! Especially the tacos!!They were a lot bigger then they are now! I remember the tomato slice on the top that fit across the top of the taco! Please bring back Naugles!!

For what it's worth Taco Bell used to be very good too in a different way. They were realy good before they got bought out by Pepsi and made for the masses!!

Well all the best to all the Naugles lovers!

Many cars lined up at midnight for the egg burritos, green sauce was my fav! Bring it all back, please!

  78. I used to work at Builders Emporium in Long Beach off the Traffic Circle. There was A Naugles right across the alley from us. The Builders people and the Naugles people used to hang quite a bit so we got totally taken care of. I just to LOVE the Taco Salads. But they used make me a Taco Salad burrito. Outrageous!!!!!!

  79. The Naugle Burger!!.. That would be awesome!! Naugles was the favorite hang out after a night of partying at Black Angus in City of Industry.. Naugles on Colima in Walnut!!.. I really hope Del Taco will bring back some of these recipes.. the double cheeseburger at Del Taco does not compare to the NAUGLE BURGER.. I do love Del
Taco but a Naugle Burger on the menu would just put it over the top for me.. p.s.. you can order a small taco salad which is pretty close to the taco cup from Naugles..it's not on their menu.. just ask for it!! Happy Naugling!

  83. I recall traveling with my brother to his Air Force base in Utah just before Christmas in 1978...On Christmas Eve it was just the two of us, and we could not decide what to eat. We decided to go out, but Naugles was the only place open. We ate a lot of different items, and I recall all the broken taco shells they would place on the food items, as well as the biggest drink cups I had ever seen! I especially loved the Maucho items, the super hot hot sauce, and the extra large servings of killer fries! I hated to see them go, as I also visited the local stores here in So. Cal!
    P.S. I also miss Pup N Taco!

  85. I remember working the graveyard shift back in 1985 and stopping by Naugles for an egg, bean and cheese burrito and a 32 ounce ice cold milk. Oh, how I loved that combination. Their milk was kept in this large machine where the temperature was just about freezing. It was awesome! Bring Naugles menu items back, Del Taco!!! There are still a lot of us Naugles fans around...

  86. I would KILL or at least drive wayyyy out of my way to get a Naugles Taco Salad again. Something about the texture of the shredded lettuce and the delicious beef, in the just-right-sized cup was perfection. Not to mention the hot sauce.

After I moved from Huntington Beach, it was always a required first stop to hit Naugles for a snack. Then...it was gone. So sad.

I was really sad when I had to close down so many Missouri,Kansas and Illinois stores and then moved to Cali and worked for them until 87 Close to the end. 98. Several years ago I lived in Orange Co. where Naugles was my fav fast food. I now live in another state and after learning that Del Taco now owns the Naugles, I was anxiouse to try Del Taco with expectations of the old Naugles concept in the food offered. Well, I was Hugely disappointed and sorry to see that the old Naugles nolonger exists. Del Taco/Naugles is not my fav fast food and saddely the only reason I would return would be if I were starving and there were no other eateries within a twenty mile radiouse...

    ReplyDelete
  99. My first high school job was at a Naugles. The cheese burrito was my favorite along with a brief menu item called "La Grande Enchilada". They switched from steamers to a dry press for the tortillas so I don't think Del Taco is currently equipped to make cheese burritos or nachos with real cheese instead of the liquid nacho cheese. I wish they would switch back though.

We used to always go there after youth football games and if we won our game we'd get to go there for a special treat- the Naugles taco salad in a cup. And thinking back, they used to always put a balloon with Dick Naugles' picture on it in with our food. We would always play with the balloons during and after we were done eating. I think it's funny now realizing that we used to blow Dick up! How hilarious. Dick Naugles was a genius! Please bring back Naugles! I'm dying to take my girlfriend and have her blow up one of those balloons!

Naugles fan from Nashville: Just reading this artical made me hungry for all my old favorites. #1the Macho Nachos with red and green sauce. #2 the Cheese Burrito (No one has one even close) #3 the Hot Carmel Shake (OMG sinfully good). #4 the egg burrito (man there was nothing better than driving through late at night and getting an egg burrito) and last but not least #5 the really Macho Burrito. (there was no way you could hold it with one hand) Awesome!

But I loved the naugles burger, cheese burrito and the mexican salad that came in a little cup and then we would buy a tortilla on the side and dump the salad i n the tortilla. It was the best...

  119. The night I drove to three different Naugle's restaurants in a desperate bid for macho nachos, and found them all closed, will live on in my memory as one of my worst. Me an' my buds used to go there after every high school dance and replenish our energy reserves. When Naugle's went out of business, it took about half of my teenage years with it.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I used to work at the Naugles on Los Coyotes Diagonal in Long Beach. The mayo had buttermilk and msg mixed in with it. Remember the Deluxe burger with that drippy mayo? It was the best! The refried beans were seasoned with the drained, seasoned fat from the taco meat. Aren't you glad I told you that? Now, if only I had memorized the hot sauce recipe. The green sauce must have come from a can. Oh, the good old days!

  139. I really miss Naugles. I used to buy there cheese burrito and egg and cheese burrito all the time. I was so upset when all the Naugles was changed to Del Taco. Also Del Taco didn't have the cheese burrito. So I didn't go there much anymore. The last time I saw a Naugles was in Reno, Nevada. Now that is closed. I would love to see them back again. If they brought back Naugles again I would go there several times a week.

  146. Thanks for the comment. I go to that one sometimes too. We are working on bringing Naugles back.

    ReplyDelete
  147. OMG...bring it back already what the heck is wrong with these people...lol. When I was a kid my grandmother lived less than a block away from the Naugles at Brookhurst and Bell, I think? My whole family was absolutely addicted to the macho egg burritos which were by far the best I have ever had. I lived with my grandma for a few months back in 1988 and must have eaten there at least 4 times a week..I was nineteen so many an after midnight/partying meal was always in order. When I was a younger kid and we were staying at grandmas, I would get up in the morning and just "casually" mention Naugles and boom, my mom and grandma did not hesitate to give me money to obtain that "MAGICAL" egg burrito....lmao. I live in Oregon now and we have a few Del Tacos in the area....they still offer the macho egg burrito but I get it without that dreaded white sauce and extra red sauce. Not even close to the Naugles version but it gets me my fix....sometimes. I absolutely yearn for the Naugles days and would love to have the recipe for making at home....very hard to duplicate no matter how many times I try....arrrgghh. Great blog and it's a no brainer to add the Naugles original recipes to the boring Del Taco menu. Andrew Hawkins

  149. hello world

from one of two remainiing descendants of Dick Naugle. I worked not only at Naugle's, but also Del Panther and Del Taco from the age of 5.

I was involved with the development of the original egg burrito in Lancaster, CA and have many stories about Dick Naugle.

Currently working on the Naugles.com website.

    Happy Holidays to all!

  152. Okay all you Naugles fans and long ago late night eaters. I was at the top of the late night eaters game, after school events, going out to a function or beach party. We had so much memories about Naugles. We would hang out and much down on the best food. I had a paper route once so i could save money so i didn't have to ask my mom for it. i was diligent about getting to my favorite food place from riding my bike or skateboard (in my youth), to driving my car with my wife to get Naugles. My favorite was the Taco Salad in the paper bowl and a large Welch's grape drink that had crushed ice. I had everything on the menu many times over, through all the years. How did Dick Naugles say it on the three remarks on the food ticket? " fresh food-fast service- and?

  158. We had a Naugles on E. Colonial Dr.,here in Orlando. It was Great, but short lived. Yes, I wish they would come back, but as I see these posts have been going on for over 5 years. Corporate America amazes me. Is Senor Naugles still alive? Heck, name it something else if you have to! Is it White Castle or is it Royal Castle? Thank-you.

I worked mainly at the Chapman Ave., Orange store starting at age 15 in 81. The "Tortilla Con Queso" with green sauce and sour cream, the Ort~Egg Sandwich, taco salad, macho nachos, the Hot fudge shake, just to name a few of my favorites. The Gazpacho wasn't a big seller then but think it would be now, very healthy hot or cold soup and tasty!. The egg and bean burrito used to gross me out to make it, but once I tried it..well, pretty good. Fresh taco meat every 20 minutes, fresh pot of beans cooked every shift and hand mashed. All of the machines and fixtures broken down for cleaning every night, some every shift. Very clean restaurant and very good food!! We sure hope it returns! Want the yellow retro uniform top too!

  167. i miss the 'Naugle Burger' torta, as well. when i moved to Cali(OC)from Akron in 1980, I wasn't crazy about mexi food (now i love it, and the hotter, the better)- 'Naugle Burger' torta to the rescue! they were awesome. there were several naugles around saddleback valley where i lived, and i learned to really dig their food. when i moved to Alpine in 1986, I would shine the local taco shops to drive down to El Cajon, where we had a Naugles on Broadway, now a taco shop that has unfortunately become infamous as the location for a recent high-profile police shooting. you've probably seen it in the TV news, where the victim pointed a vaping device at a cop and the cops killed him. quite unfortunate- the litigation is still ongoing... thanks for some good food memories, Naugles!

  169. There was a Naugles in Waukesha, WI. back in 1987 and I had moved to the Eastside of Milwaukee and I was pregnant and craving Naugles. I drove every other day 40 minutes to get a bean and cheese burrito with extra cheese, extra sour cream and green sauce. The manager got to know me and would give me a shake for free once a week. That was the last five months of my pregnancy. After I gave birth I took the baby in for everyone to see. <3 I miss Naugles.
