Below is our old entry from June 8, 2011:

First Taco Bell tried introducing carnitas meat and now Del Taco is testing (at least I think it's just a test item for now). Posters in the windows show the burritos but when you go in you see they also have a carnitas torta and carnitas big fat tacos:

I tried it in the torta and the carnitas meat was pretty good, certainly less processed overall than the Taco Bell attempt was.

The location I got it at was here, and I think I also saw a poster for it here. Click any of the three images here to be taken to the complete Del Taco flickr album.
UPDATE: Del Taco has moved these items from testing to being regular items in all their stores. Here's the press release:

Oh yes, I'm sure there's some guy out back of every Del Taco with a big copper or steel cazo and a big paddle, slowly stirring every part of the pig in simmering lard until it's just perfectly done... (roll eyes).

No fast food restaurant is ever going to make carnitas. They're going to make dry, stringy pork shoulder.

Yes, this is clearly a fast food version. Didn't think anybody would be surprised by that. It should just be seen in the realm it exists in, not as a suggested substitute for other stuff you prefer.

The meat in my torta was so mixed up with the other ingredients that it was hard to judge it on its own.

No kidding, no fast food place in my eyes can ever compare to a authentic mexican restuarant, ever! If they did it wouldn't cost 99 cents for a taco. Any quality taco or burrito at a fast food chain would go for 4 to 5 bucks hands down and taste like the real deal. That will never happen.

Really? Why would you (Dave Lieberman) even expect it to be authentic? A steel cazo? Maybe in their huaraches and sombrero too. Get real.... it's freakin Del Taco....It is what is is...
