Presidential Preference

Getting ready to post another restaurant review (probably later today) but just noticed at The Astute Recorder that outgoing President George W. Bush is a big fan of Mexican food. How come I never found that out until his last full day in office? Hopefully President Obama also likes him some Mexican food.

well Christian, we happened to dine at Olamendi's in Capistrano Beach on Saturday. There are a number of pictures of W there along with the old ones of Nixon. He was right in your backyard enjoying Mexican food.

I took pics from our party of10 so i'll send you review soon.

Have been meaning to get back to Olamendi's since my one visit there just over two years ago. Looking forward to seeing some new pics...

Hey, Christian, thanks for the reference to Astute's story on Prez foods. The Bush's are really into Mexican food, not surprising Tex Mex. As a matter of fact former First Lady Laura said in an interview once that was one thing she missed the most about being "away from home."

As for Obama, he has been known to eat nachos but as for their authenticity and whether he likes the cuisine as a whole is up for grabs!

I think somebody at El Cholo claimed to have invented nachos, which raises an interesting question: Can a Mexican person living in California create an authentic Mexican dish? I've talked to several experts on the subject and they all to me it's next to impossible to determine with any certainty what's authentic and what's not. Which is why I say it's not a toggle switch where something is either authentic or not but more of a spectrum with different items fitting on different points of the authenticity spectrum.

That's an excellent point that can apply to all cultural cuisines! How interesting on the El Cholo trivia.

Yeah, I've never got a clear answer from anyone on what makes a particular Mexican dish authentic or inauthentic. The fact that there's cross-pollination between the US and Mexico (food-wise) further blurs the issue.
