Catching Up with the OC Weekly

Went to a local Mexican eatery for lunch earlier today and picked up a copy of last Thursday's OC Weekly, which I don't read very often anymore since I already have all the cosmetic surgery I need, but in looking through it I found out about all these events I missed over the weekend such as a Gustavo Arrelano/Gringo Bandito mashup in Los Angeles and an event called the "White Trash a Go Go Cinco de Mayo!"

Page 20 of this issue shows a bunch of signs from Mexican restaurants around the county, all of which feature a caricatured bandito character and there's plenty of promotion for Gustavo's new book, "Ask a Mexican!" The OC Weekly figures they won't have to promote him anymore after this issue. The only issue I have with "Ask a Mexican!" is that it claims that only gringos call gringos gringos, but that Mexicans call gringos "gabachos." Well, I was called a "gringo" the other day by a Mexican so it does happen.

Cancun - Exterior

Met up about a week and half ago for lunch with my cousin Sean at Cancun Mexican Restaurant, a place he recommended and which he goes to on frequent lunch breaks from his work. Sean works at Nitro Records and is also one of the key figures in the Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce revolution. Sean also took a couple of the pictures that appear in this review.

Cancun - Interior Shot #1

Cancun is one of those hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop places that pretty much only the locals know about but it deserves some wider recognition, and that's where I step in, spreading knowledge of this county's many great Mexican restaurants.

Sean got a chicken torta and souped it up with some Gringo Bandito hot sauce which was already there on the premises and which, the owner told us, has been a hit with their other customers:

Cancun - Torta and Gringo Bandito

I ordered one chicken and one fish taco, both were grilled and both were surprisingly zesty and full of flavor. The fish taco had just the right amount of fishy flavor to it and the chicken taco had a robust herbal flavor to it. The fish taco was also filled with tomatos and cabbage while the chicken taco was filled with onions and cilantro which shows that the owners here know that different taco fillings work better with different types of meat. The Gringo Bandito sauce worked especially well on the chicken taco.

Sean and I discussed what rating to give Cancun and we were both hovering around the 3.5 - 4 Speedy Gonzales range, so Cancun gets the first 3¾ Speedy Gonzales rating awarded at this blog:

The Legend of Gringo Bandito

Smokin' hot off the presses, like fresh smoke drifting off the barrels of Gringo Bandito's two just-fired revolvers, comes the first announcement to the public of the availability of new Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce, formulated by the legendary Gringo Bandito himself, better known as Dexter Holland, the singer for punk group The Offspring and founder of Nitro Records. Dexter, a longtime Orange County resident, set out a couple years ago to concoct the quintessential hot sauce and has finally arrived at the perfect combination with a mixture of habañero peppers, jalapeño peppers, red japanese chili peppers, and a secret blend of eleven herbs and spices. Or maybe seven herbs and spices. Who's counting?

Having not had any homemade Mexican food around since receiving my sample jars I have only been able to try it on some KFC food and have to admit it was very friendly to my taste buds.

Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce is only available online at the moment but while you're ordering be sure to pick up some Gringo Bandito t-shirts, stickers, buttons, and frisbees. The site also has plenty of recipes (someone sure knew how to use style sheets to make the recipes very printer-friendly), photos, testimonials, and more. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up seeing a jar of Gringo Bandito on a table in a Mexican restaurant someday.

UPDATE: Have just been told by my cousin who works at Nitro that Gringo Bandito can already be found on tables at the following Orange County restaurants:

  • Fiesta Grill (HB)
  • Cancun (HB)
  • Normita's Surf City Tacos (HB)
  • Las Barcas (HB)
  • TK Burger (CM, NB, HB)
  • Chronic Cantina (CM)
  • Pancho's (Orange)
  • Azteca's (FV)
  • Molcajete Grill (FV)
