El Conejo, RIP

Unfortunately we have another closure to announce. The Register's Irvine Retail Blog has reported that El Conejo in Irvine has closed down. The entry states that it was because of slowing business. It always seemed busy when I went so I wonder how much business it takes for a restaurant to survive. No word on if the smaller El Conejito has closed down too but I'll presume it's still open until I hear otherwise. UPDATE: It has been confirmed that all other locations are still open for business.

I am relieved that the one on Tustin Ave in Santa Ana is still open.

I live near the Tustin Ave location.......it really isn't very good mexican food....the good thing is....it's cheap!....and sometimes cheap fills the order.....the one thing that this location has going for it is....it's location!

the one in Laguna Hills looked open when I drove by it today. Doesn't surprise me that this location closed. It's the only none-Asian restaurant in this center and the others fill up all the parking.

I've eaten at El Conejo since 1976 and now live in NorCal-I really miss it!

El Conejo in Laguna Hills will be closing in 4 weeks. I didn't get an answer as to why, but I am assuming it's due to slow business like the Irvine site. So enjoy it while it lasts this month of August!

I just went to El Conejo off of Tustin this past Sunday for the first time in about 13 years, and boy, it was still as good as ever. I ordered the Chicken Sopes (which aren't listed on the menu, but you can order them) with a side of rice and beans, and they are still wonderful. If you think that you would like the taste of a thick corn tortilla with beans, meat, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, tomatoes, and lots of lettuce on top, then these are for you. Go give them a try. Muy delicioso!!!

P.S. I also tasted the Albondigas soup, and it was the best I have ever had...so...go taste that too!!!

Thanks for the info. If you want you can even do a guest review of that location. Sounds like you are very familiar with it.

Most of the stuff there is only ok, but they excel at chicken! The chicken burritos are among the best I've ever had, and Chicken Sopes are fantastic.
