UPDATE: Tia Juana's has closed down as of late 2011.

So, I went back to Tia Juana's on a lunch break just to get some pictures because last time I was there only one of my pictures turned out. Ordered the Alaskan Mero entree again but instead of ordering the deep fried ice cream I got their tequila lime cheesecake as a dessert.

My co-worker Ed ordered the shrimp enchilada and liked it better than shrimp enchiladas he's had elsewhere because it had big chunks of shrimp in it. He was about to order dessert but was too stuffed from the chips and his entree. He said he'd give Tia Juana's a four Speedy Gonzales rating. I'm sticking with my original three Speedy Gonzales rating (although it's maybe more solid this time) and combining the two for a three and a half Speedy Gonzales rating:

Great food and wonderful ambience and very generous portion of food. Service is above average and you will not leave this place disappointed.

What exactly am I looking at, with the Alaskan mero platter? I tried looking up the description of the dish on the online menu, but it's not listed. Was it a daily special?

I described the Alaskan Mero in my first entry on Tia Juana's as "yellow corn-meal encrusted Alaskan halibut topped with citrus chipotle sauce and served with some zucchini/yellow squash concoction and yellow corn masa (there's a definite yellow theme going on here)."

Don't know why it wasn't on their online menu back then and don't know why they didn't add it when they recently updated their site.

D'oh! I didn't think to look back at the first review.

I just tried their new menu. Much better look and actual specials now. The Enchiladas espanolas were especially good. I'll go again...especially because it's the only non-chain restaurant around Irvine!

I know there's at least one other restaurant in Irvine that is not part of a chain . . . but they are planning on adding a second OC location next year so maybe then they will be part of a chain.
